BASIC BRANDING STEPS WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS
“A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.”
– Seth Godin
This month I want to talk to those of you who are yet to start or are right at the beginning of your business journey.
The ones sitting on an amazing idea, quietly researching and fleshing out the concept. And those of you who might even be thinking about names, maybe even playing around with logos or Instagram handles, but still feel like you are at the starting line.
Because right now, there is a clear and exciting shift happening. A lot more people are looking at how to start a business, with Small Business Connections recently reporting a significant rise in that good old search ‘How to Start a Business’ across Australia. It is a sign of how many people are ready to create something of their own and an opportunity for me to help you get it right at the grass roots level.
What often gets overlooked in that early excitement is the part that matters most long term! Not the logo, not the website, not even the business name.
The brand foundation.
Before anything is designed or launched, there is a piece to the puzzle that will quietly determine whether your business will feel clear and confident or scattered and hard to define. And unfortunately, whilst a key part of the planning, many business owners rush through this or don’t even consider it at all, because they are just too eager to just get started.
So, this month, I want to slow that down a little and talk about what actually matters at the beginning, and the basic branding steps that will make everything you do after feel a whole lot easier.
So strap yourself in and let’s get to it!
Warmly, Alysha

Wow Studios Resources Now Online
I’ve got something a little special to share with you this month.
Wow now has a dedicated resources page.
This is something I’ve been building quietly behind the scenes for a while, and it’s essentially a growing library of tools, guides and brand education content designed to support you at different stages of your business journey.
Normally, this page sits behind a subscription or member access screen, but since you’re already here and part of the Wow Studios Family, I wanted to open it up for you.
Think of it as a behind-the-scenes space where I share practical branding support, ideas, and tools that don’t always make it into the main content or newsletters but are incredibly useful when you are actually building or refining your brand.
Whether you are still shaping your idea, just getting started, or already running a business and want more clarity, this is where you can go for extra support and inspiration.
You can explore it here:

I’ll continue adding to this over time, so it becomes a go-to space you can come back to whenever you need a bit of direction, clarity, or a reminder of the foundations that matter most when building a strong brand.
Enjoy having a look around, and I hope it gives you something useful as you continue shaping your own ideas and business.
LET’S TALK BRANDING
What are the basic branding steps when starting a business?
As I mentioned in the intro, recently, there has been a noticeable spike in the number of people searching ‘how to start a business’, with recent reporting from Small Business Connections highlighting a 25 percent jump in “how to start a business” searches across Australia.
It makes sense.
More than ever, people are looking for freedom, flexibility, and the chance to build something of their own. Side hustles are turning into full-time businesses. Ideas are moving faster than ever from thought to launch thanks to AI and for both young and old, the desire to live intentionally in a way that makes us happy has become a priority.
But there’s a pattern that shows up regularly for the majority of new business start-ups.
People focus on starting the business but skip the part that actually makes the business work long term.
Branding.
And not just the surface level version of branding.
The real foundational stuff that guides your business, keeps you on track as you make those all-important foundational decisions and helps you grow.
The problem with how most people start a business
When someone decides to start a business, the usual order looks something like this:
- Choose a name
- Design a logo
- Build a website
- Start posting on social media
- Try to get clients
On the surface, it looks productive. But underneath, there’s often something missing.
CLARITY
Without clarity, everything else becomes guesswork.
And guesswork shows up in inconsistent messaging, confused customers, and marketing that never quite feels like it’s working or wastes valuable time and money.
What branding actually is (before anything else)
“A brand is not what you say it is. It’s what THEY say it is.”
— Marty Neumeier
This is where most new business owners get caught.
They think branding is something they create visually first. But in truth, branding actually starts long before design.
It starts with positioning, perception, and the way people experience your business from the very first interaction.
Your logo and colours don’t define your brand; your CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE does.
The basic branding steps every new business should start with
If we strip it right back, these are the foundations that make everything else easier:
- Clarity on who you are speaking to – Your TARGET AUDIENCE
Not “everyone”. Not “anyone who needs this”.
The more specific you are, the easier it becomes to communicate clearly. Taking the time to delve deep into who your customer really is and then understanding where and how to approach them is key to reaching your audience without wasting your precious start up capital taking a stab in the dark!
- A clear positioning point
What do you want to be known for?
Not just what you do, but what makes you different in the space you’re entering. It can be easy to fool yourself into thinking your product or service is unique, especially when those new business excitement flutters are in full swing. However, in reality, coming up with a genuinely new, never ever been seen before idea is incredibly rare. You might be putting your own special spin on it, but chances are there are other businesses with similar offerings and understanding those COMPETITORS is another vital component of building a strong brand foundation.
You know to know your competition in order to work out how your going to stand out.
- A SIMPLE MESSAGE people can repeat
If someone had to explain your business in one sentence, could they?
If not, your message is probably too layered.
Getting a new business off the ground is tough, and if you’re not clear in your message, what you’re offering and how to clearly articulate that to your audience its going to get lost in translation. And when they don’t understand, they won’t listen.
You only get one chance to make a good impression, so make sure you use it wisely and ensure you have a strong, clear message that draws your target audience in. And linking back to point number one… if you understand why your target audience needs your product and how it helps them, you’re already a clear step ahead in creating a message that will resonate and convert.
- A visual identity that supports your business, not just something pretty
Design is not just about looking good.
Your visuals should help people quickly understand who you are, what you do, and why your business matters, not simply grab attention.
Your visual identity is one of the most powerful tools in your branding toolkit, but only when it is built with purpose. From choosing brand colours that align with the emotions you want to evoke, to creating a logo that connects with your audience and works seamlessly across different platforms, every element should be intentional.
A STRONG BRAND IDENTITY is not just attractive, it is practical. Your logo and visual assets need to be versatile, easy to recognise, and adaptable across everything from social media icons to signage, packaging, and print materials.
Because in today’s digital-first world, having branding that not only looks professional but also functions effectively everywhere your business shows up is essential.
- A consistent brand FEELING
This is the part most people overlook.
How should your brand feel?
Grounded. Premium. Approachable. Bold. Calm.
This becomes the filter for every decision moving forward. How your brand makes people feel creates an emotional bond. If you can find a way to connect them on a deeper level with your business, you will win them for life. This all links back to your VALUES and what your business stands for beyond making a profit. What is it that’s driving you to go out on your own and create this in the first place. Right now, it’s a passion project, so make sure you build that into your brand foundation right from the start while its clear in your mind.
Why this matters more now than ever
As the Small Business Connections article highlights, more people are entering business earlier and faster than ever before. That speed is exciting, but it also means fewer people are slowing down to build the foundation properly.
And that’s where the gap appears.
Because in crowded markets, it’s not the fastest starter that wins, it’s the clearest brand. The one that connects with their audience and stands out from the crowd. With so many new businesses forming all the time, strong branding is what will get you noticed and help you kick those new business milestones better than the competition.
A simple way to think about it
If you’re starting a business, think of branding like this:
Clarity first
Design second
Marketing third
Not the other way around.
Final thought
The rise in new business creation is a good thing. It shows ambition, creativity, and movement. But the businesses that last will not be the ones that started the quickest. They will be the ones that started with clarity.
Because branding is not something you add later. It’s the thing that makes everything else make sense from the beginning.
BRAND EDUCATION
More women are choosing to build their own businesses later in life
One of the most exciting shifts happening right now is the growing number of women in their 30s, 40s, and 50s choosing to step into business ownership.
For many, this is not about starting from scratch. It is about finally building something of their own.
Across Australia and beyond, more women are leaving corporate careers, turning side hustles into serious ventures, or transforming years of experience, passion, and personal skills into brands that reflect who they truly are.
And honestly, it’s truly exciting.
By this stage in life, many women have already built extensive professional experience, developed valuable skills, and gained a much deeper understanding of what they want, and just as importantly, what they no longer want.
For some, it is the desire for more flexibility.
For others, it is the need for greater purpose.
And for many, it is about creating financial independence on their own terms.
For me personally, it was a combination of all of these, but also a desire to do something I love in a way that matches my personal values… empowering others, especially my fellow female entrepreneurs is my motivation for everything I do in business.
This shift is powerful because women are no longer waiting for permission to build something meaningful. They are recognising the value of their expertise and creating businesses that align with their lifestyle, values, and long-term goals.
But while the ambition is strong, one of the biggest challenges often lies in knowing how to position yourself clearly in a crowded market.
That is where branding becomes so important.
When you are building a business later in life, you are not just selling a product or service. You are packaging years of knowledge, personal growth, and professional credibility into something people can connect with and trust.
Your brand becomes the bridge between your past experience and your future audience.
This is why brand education matters so much for women entering business at this stage. It is not just about having a logo or social media presence. It is about understanding:
- How to clearly communicate your value
- How to stand out authentically
- How to position yourself confidently
- How to build trust and recognition
Because the truth is, many incredible women already have the expertise needed to build successful businesses. What they often need is the clarity and strategic brand foundation to bring it all together.

It is proof that entrepreneurship doesn’t have an age limit. Experience is actually the advantage.
So, if you are one of the many women sitting on an idea or a dream that has been waiting for the right time, this may just be your sign.
