What to do when your brand isn't working

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR BRAND ISN’T WORKING

If you’ve ever looked at your logo, social posts, or marketing materials and thought “Something feels off, but I don’t know what”, you’re not alone.

Most business owners don’t come to a graphic designer because they want “something pretty.”
They come because they don’t have the skills needed to create the designs themselves or they are feeling stuck, frustrated, or overwhelmed by how their business looks.

Here are a few common struggles I see all the time:

You’ve tried DIY graphics, templates, or Canva… but nothing quite looks professional.

Your branding feels inconsistent, one style on Instagram, another on your website, something else again in print.

You know your business is good, but your visuals aren’t reflecting that quality.

You’re busy running your business and don’t have time to constantly design or redesign things.

And the biggest one?
👉 You want your business to stand out and feel credible, but you’re not sure how to make that happen visually.

This is where working with a graphic designer can make a real difference.

A designer helps bring clarity to your brand, turning your ideas, values, and goals into visuals that feel aligned, intentional and authentic. It’s not just about logos or colours; it’s about creating a consistent look and feel that builds trust, saves you time, and makes your business easier to recognise.

When your branding is working:

However, if you’re not ready to work with a designer, here are:

7 simple ways to get your brand back on track (DIY).

Step 1: Pick ONE main message

If your brand feels confusing, it’s often because your message is too broad.

Choose one clear statement that sums up what you do and who you help.

Example: “I help busy women build a brand that feels like them.”

Step 2: Check for consistency

Open your Instagram, website, and any printed materials.

Are the fonts, colours, and photo styles matching?

If not, that’s a sign your brand has drifted.

Consistency = trust.

Even small mismatches can make your brand feel messy. Try creating templates you can use across all your platforms to ensure everything has the same look and feel.

Step 3: Choose 3 brand colours (Max)

Too many colours = confusing brand.

Pick 3 main colours and stick to them everywhere.

If you need a quick rule:

  • 1 primary colour
  • 1 accent colour
  • 1 neutral colour

Step 4: Update your logo usage

Many brands don’t realise they’ve been using their logo incorrectly.

Make sure you’re using the same logo version everywhere, and keep it readable and uncluttered.

Step 5: Use the same photo style

Photos can make or break your brand.

Pick one style and stick to it, such as:

  • bright & airy
  • moody & warm
  • colourful & bold
  • clean & minimal

Consistency in photos instantly makes your brand feel more professional and polished.

Step 6: Make your text easier to read

A brand can look “off” simply because the text is too small or too busy.

Use clear headings, simple fonts, and enough spacing.

Tip: If your font feels “too fancy” or hard to read, swap it for something cleaner. You may like how it looks but if its difficult for the viewer to read they wont bother and your message gets lost.

Step 7: Create a simple brand style snapshot

This doesn’t need to be fancy.
Just a one-page style sheet that includes your logo, colour palette, typography, imager and brand guidelines.

This makes future designs so much easier, and keeps your brand consistent.

Here’s a template to get you started.
