“Good Design is Good Business.”

Thomas Watson Jr

Welcome to this month’s newsletter, where we’re diving into why great design is so much more than just aesthetics and making this look nice. From influencing emotions to creating experiences, telling stories, and driving brand loyalty, design has a unique power to turn ideas into lasting impressions and impact how people feel and interact with brands.

In this issue, we’ll explore how great design can make a big impact, connect with people, and bring ideas to life in a way that really matters.

EXCITING NEWS

WOW TURNS THREE!

Later this month Wow Studios is turning three! Wow, time flies! We can hardly believe it’s been three years already. It’s been an incredible journey, and we couldn’t have reached this milestone without the trust and support of our amazing clients, friends and community.

From day one, our mission has been to help bring our clients creative ideas to life and to consistently deliver value and quality. Reflecting on the past three years, we’re so proud of what we’ve accomplished together — and this is only the beginning!

Thank you for believing in us and helping us grow. Every project, every collaboration, and every bit of feedback has helped us get here. We couldn’t have done it without you, and we’re beyond excited for what’s next.

Here’s to many more years together! 🥂

LET’S TALK BRANDING

Why Good Design Matters

WHY GOOD DESIGN MATTERS!

It’s all in the communication.

“Good design is obvious, great design is transparent”.

– Joe Sparano

Your brand is your most valuable asset. It’s what sets you apart from your competition and defines how customers perceive your business. Good designs can help a company to attract and retain customers, while bad designs can drive customers away.

Design isn’t just making something pretty, it’s a communication tool!

Back in 2007, The UK Design Council undertook a fact-finding mission to uncover just how important good design is in business. The results will astound you! They surveyed 1500 businesses and discovered that the businesses that put an emphasis on good design performed 200% better than those that didn’t. And when good design principles were integrated into their marketing strategy, they were less likely to have to compete on price.

“Design can directly and significantly improve sales, profits, turnover and growth:”.

Good Design Builds Recognition

Ensuring you always put your best face forward builds confidence and credibility. Consistency is the key to building a strong and recognisable brand. It’s really important to be consistent across all your brand materials and that includes everything from your website to your social media, marketing materials, packaging, business cards and everything in between.

Your brand should include a colour palette with a limited colour range. Ideally 3-4 but no more than 5 key colours that work together and these should be used across all aspects of your brand. That way, when seen regularly, the viewer begins to recognise your brand colours and associate them with your business. It also creates a professional and stylish look that will help you stand out and appeal to the viewer. First impressions really do matter, and if it’s too chaotic or all over the place you’re not going to impress anyone!

Good Design Communicates Effectively

A good design will help you effectively communicate your message through the use of visual hierarchy; scale, contrast, direction, composition and alignment, colour and the use of white space. Its important to keep your designs as simple as possible, especially if you’re trying to get across a lot of information. The simpler you make the delivery of your message, the easier it is for your audience to receive it correctly.

Good Design Increase Trust

Businesses with poor design are often overlooked, especially online. If the design is lacking, regardless of how great the content may be, viewers wont even take a second glance. Ensure your designs are easy to navigate and read. Ensure you use an easy to read and well sized text, and ensure your content isn’t too wordy or overly busy. Key highlights help ensure even the most impatient viewer gets at least 1-2 key takeaway points at a glance.

Good Design Sets You Apart

If you’re choosing between two similar products or services with similar offerings and price points, usually you’re going to pick the one that looks better! Regardless of which product may actually be better, when all things are equal, we have a human bias to go for the one that looks prettier and stands out more.

Good Design Helps you Appeal to the Right Audience!

A good design will appeal to your target audience subconsciously. They should naturally be drawn to your products and marketing. If you have done your research and know your target audience well, you should be able to appeal to your audience on a subconscious level through the use of colour, imagery and language.

If you are wondering if you should be spending your hard-earned dollars ongood  design, wonder no more. Good design gives you a competitive edge and makes your marketing stand out. Align yourself with a great designer who will take the time to understand your brand and target audience. The extra investment will pay you back dividends later, I promise!

When is the right time to develop your Christmas marketing plans? If you’re a big company with lots of stakeholders and a marketing budget for tv commercials and advertising, then I hate to tell you, but your already behind the jingle bell!

Principles of Design

When it comes to design, especially if you are a beginner, it’s best to adhere to the less is more philosophy. To make something both eye-catching and effective at delivering your message there are a few basic techniques that will help.

Good Design Fundamentals

Here a few simple design tricks to help ensure your new logo looks great! Just remember you MUST have a vectorised file so if you’re attempting to do it yourself you need to ensure the program you use can provide you with a vector output like a PNG. If not, it really is best to spend the money and use a designer. You will thank yourself later!

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

A LOOK BACK AT SOME OF OUR FAVOURITE PROJECTS!

This month, as part of our birthday celebrations we thought we would look back on some of our favourite projects. Here’s a quick recap of the top 5 and why they resonate with us.

First Aid & Safety NSW

Right back at the beginning of Wow, we got the opportunity to put our illustration skills to the test on a series of first aid instruction posters. Working out how to express instructions through the use of visuals that can be understood by anyone regardless of age or language was both a challenge and a delight and we think the end result speaks for itself!

Offgrid Travelling

We had so much fun manipulating a real-life image of this travel brands 4wd and turning it into a very personal and recognisable logo. And since then, we have even had the opportunity to develop a few more as their business has grown. We just love the idea that this one isn’t just another image but a reflection of what these guys really look like as they drive by you!

Marmalade Money

For this logo we had the opportunity to get really imaginative and also to play with bold colours. Finding a way to mash the finance world with a dose of Marmalade really got the creative juices flowing.

EP&T Global

This one was all about finding a way to communicate the heart of this organisation’s values to its employees and stakeholders. Bringing to life the heartbeat concept intertwined with the global aspect of their business gave us the opportunity to create something really eye-catching and distinctive.

Dilly's Ice Cream

We recently got the opportunity to turn back time and explore old school vintage design styles and bring to life this uber cool ice cream mascot. We just love how it all came together, from the vintage colour palette to retro character, this one always makes us smile!
